This has to STOP and we must make a stand.
Did you know that Common Agriculture Policy” payments worth more than £110 million a year are given to Spanish farmers using their pastures to rear fighting bulls? A study concluded, “without such backing [bullfighting] would probably be on the brink of financial collapse”.
Many of you know that bullfighting is a cruel and torturous practice that belongs in mediaeval times, along with bear baiting and human slaves put in a ring to fight with Lions. The reason the hardened bull fighting supporters, nowadays the older and more uneducated generation give, is culture!! The government would have their people believe it is because they think it improves the Spanish economy, but what they don’t realise is that they have lost support for this and the Spanish economy could be improved in many other ways, with many other inoffensive cultural activities, that people can enjoy. Quite honestly the motives for keeping the bullfighting, no longer washes with the general population, or the tourists who are now coming to realise what a terribly cruel and unkind practice this is. In fact we know that many people now refuse to visit Spain, as it has a reputation for cruelty to animals!
The majority of Spanish people, particularly young people want it to be completely abolished.
This cannot happen as long as tax payers are unwittingly subsidising this cruel practice. If you are a tax payer in the UK, do you want your hard earned money to go to Spain where it subsidises the farmers to bring up a Bull for 4 years?
The expense of this and the treatment that this Bull receives in its 4 years is unfounded. The Bull has a wonderful life, only at the end of this expensive rearing it will be sent into the bullring, terrified, with all its previous 4 years of dignified treatment removed at once. These naturally peaceful herd animals, are goaded, petrified and shocked, with their eyes blinded with Vaseline, wet newspaper stuffed into their eyes and drugged to weaken them and many other disgusting, unmentionable barbaric acts, that this Bull will go through before it dies a long and painful, horrific death, with its last moment on earth in complete terror!!!
This is the 21st century; grown men in a ring with a weakened and terrified bull, to torture it to death in front of a baying crowd? What fair game and entertainment is there in that?
Yet still there are those that try to justify it. Anyone who justifies this, is either inhumane without feeling and is not evolved enough to live in this century, or is uneducated and merely stupid! Surely humanity has better things to spend their time and money on, even those that have no empathy for these poor animals and their suffering!
Moreover do you know that if bullfighting were to end, there are many other cruel practices in Spain against animals that it may well have a beneficial effect in preventing?
As long as there is bullfighting in Spain the anti- cruelty laws remain unclear, these could well be reformed and save many hunting dogs, one of the big secret shames in Spain. They are treated with appalling disrespect, before they are murdered, abandoned, or left in a municipal pound.
For more information on how hunting dogs are treated, please read ESDAW’s article.
Seprona the arm of the Police responsible for taking action against cruelty, tell us that there is not enough evidence to support the facts of cruelty; why? Because the government do not want to bring attention to how bad this situation is. But we have many photo evidences, with proof of dates, as do many other Associations and individual rescuers fighting against these cruel acts. Take a look at our recent case of murdered dogs in Fortuna.
Please help us to fight cruelty in Spain and the abolishment of bullfighting will be a very effective place to start.
