Paloma is typical of many campo dogs, or country dogs in Spain. Spain has such vast regions of countryside and wherever you go, country villages and surrounding, you may encounter a dog like Paloma. Chained up, in filthy conditions, often no food and no water and in many cases no shade. In those cases, perhaps we can try to do something, in extreme cases we can take a legal stance but the majority, like Paloma, it is accepted and it is common. There are thousands like her. Paloma is a working dog, she has no life other than to lie in filth and guard a few goats in this filthy shed. She is a Spanish Mastin,  who are one of the gentlest and sweetest natured dogs, they are not guard dogs, they have no aggression and in fact in Spain the more placid the temperament of the breed, the more likely they are to be neglected, abused and treated with contempt, Galgos are an example, the awful treatment of the hunting dogs is now well documented.

Paloma's owners are feeding her, bare minimum, stale food that has sat there for days, (and only because her advocate, a neighbour begged them to do so), she has water, and she has shade, so no law is broken.  The laws of neglect are very vague, with no clearly defined guidelines? .. Actin wants to work with the Police and Seprona, so therefore we cannot call the Police to every chained dog, they will soon start to lose interest and perhaps not help us with the extreme cases.

The only hope is we can get through to the owner - just a little bit, persuade them that the animal is suffering, or even ask that the dog comes into our care for veterinary treatment, as we do with many other dogs.

We have to get better laws and an official body registered in Spain to properly monitor cases like these.

We will return to try to make a case for Paloma. We want to help her but the reality is we can only do our best.  Please support Actin in our work, please spread the word and help us to prevent this kind of treatment to animals.

If you have similar cases near you, please don't ignore them, try speaking with your neighbours, or posting them one of our advice leaflets here both in Spanish and English. Don't be acceptant, it should not be happening in the 21st century - poverty, ignorance, working animals - these are not excuses for cruelty!!

Please note; when reporting cruelty, to take photos with dates showing, such us the one's we show here and it is important to get videos too. Dates on the camera are not sufficient for evidence.
