Challenging the Iceberg is very descriptive of the relentless problems faced by those in animal rescue and welfare in Spain on a daily basis. The constant need for rescue, the issues of cruelty, neglect, abandonment and overpopulation that are seen every day are just the tip of the iceberg and are symptoms of a much larger problem that needs to be addressed.
This conference and seminar aims to explain the legal side of animal welfare, what the laws are, how they can be used successfully, with examples of how this has been put into practice in local areas. During the morning we will hear from Raquel Teruel a well know animal rights lawyer, Pedro Moratalla who runs a successful unit of the police (UPROMA) dedicated to animal welfare and environmental protection, and Juan Ferrer a member of the local police who specialises in animal welfare issues. Our speakers will highlight the legalities and the successes and the issues they have, and show that by working together with the town halls it is possible to make changes for animals. During the afternoon the speakers will join our seminar of representatives from various organisations where we will discuss any questions from the morning talks, any issues that need to be highlighted from experience, and try to pin point the main areas where work is needed to make changes. By the end of the conference we hope to have a clear understanding of the current law, with a list of ways that we can support animal welfare and protection.
There is more information about the conference on our PAES website, where you can also register online.
