Raquel our lawyer has had some great news, that one of her cases with DeAnimales that was started in 2012 has at last had a decision from the court. The case is about the maltreatment of a horse and pony. They were left abandoned at a Finca without food and water, and they had been beaten. They were also subjected to a hard life where they were forced to carry or pull heavy loads without proper bridle wear, causing many injuries to the animals. They were not cared for by their owner, and when the judge ordered them to be taken from the owner they were in a poor state. Since their liberation from the bad owner in 2012 they have been cared for by an association and are now in much better health.
Due to Raquel's hard work the case has progressed through the courts, all be it very slowly, and she has now heard that a decision about the owner's maltreatment of his animals has been made. The judge has already expressed his congratulations to Raquel for her research and hard work on this case, and her explanations of the animal welfare law.
Nearly 4 years later 8 months of prison to the owner - as the owner will not actually be put in prison, there is still further work to be done for the future of these kind of sentences - but it is a start and a stepping stone for further prosecutions. However, the sentence is a very serious mark against the owner and a profound move forward for animal welfare. He is also required to stop any activity for 3 years in his profession, business and is banned from having any animals ¡¡¡

I could not believe the rubbish ‘harness’ which the poor pony was being forced to work in. Incredible work by the team and fantastic work by Raquel and DeAnimals to get these equines safe, and the owner prosecuted. Every successful case is a step forward, and a precedent set for other cases. congratulations to you all.
